Even when feeding pets a natural, raw diet, it’s essential to supplement with specific nutrients for optimal health. Omega-3 fatty acids are particularly crucial because dogs and cats cannot produce them naturally. This nutrient must come from their diet, making it vital for pet owners to include an Omega-3 source like sardines in their pets' meals.
Why Omega-3s Matter for Pets on a Raw Diet
Omega-3s are known for their anti-inflammatory properties, which help support joint health, skin and coat condition, and heart function. Additionally, these fatty acids contribute to cognitive health, making them beneficial for both young and aging pets. However, Omega-3s are typically lacking in standard raw diets, as they are not naturally present in many raw meats.
Sardines: A Safe, Nutritious Omega-3 Source
Sardines are an ideal solution. With a naturally short lifespan, they accumulate fewer toxins compared to larger fish like tuna, making them safer for regular consumption. Rich in Omega-3s, calcium, vitamin B12, and protein, sardines support the immune system, enhance skin health, and strengthen bones. Feeding sardines a couple of times a week provides these health benefits in a form that is highly bioavailable and easy to digest. They can be fed frozen, thereby ensuring that the Omega-3 oils have not been compromised.
Omega-3 Supplements: An Alternative Approach
If sardines aren’t readily available, Omega-3 supplements designed for pets are another option. However, it’s important to be cautious with extracted Omega-3 oils. Once exposed to light and oxygen, these oils can become rancid, potentially causing digestive issues, inflammation, and oxidative stress in pets. To ensure safety, always choose high-quality, well-packaged supplements and store them in cool, dark conditions.
By incorporating Omega-3s through sardines or careful supplementation, you’ll provide balanced and bio-available nutrition that aligns with a natural raw food diet. Your pets will enjoy improved health and vitality, reflecting the power of a diet consisting of real, fresh food.
Meal Idea:
To add variety to their diet while providing excellent nutrition, replace one or two meals a week with the following - quantity depending on the size of the dog.
- One or two sardines
- One or two raw, free-range eggs
- Milk kefir or plain yogurt
Make sure to include the calcium rich egg shell, but this must be crushed very finely with a roller pin or grinder. We don't want sharp edges left.
Nature is our medicine and we remain committed to feeding our dogs and cats real, nutrient dense food so we can watch them thrive!
